In this Grade 7 unit, I combine Design and Service Learning. Students create a toy which is donated as a Christmas gift for children in a local cancer hospital. Their toy is designed for a child approximately 4-8 years old. Requirements include that the toy must be safe to play with (no sharp edges, splinters and only stain, not paint to be used) and have at least 1 moveable part. Students are introduced to the Design Cycle, designing for a client, an advanced Computer Aided Design (CAD) system and potentially new tools, depending on their design. For example, although the primary material is wood, toys may include 3-D printed, laser cut or metal parts as well. In addition, they create a special note for the child receiving their toy, which is personalised and gives operating instructions.
